Alessandra Vieira Jamgochian
Alessandra "Leka" Vieira is the founder of Checkmat Valencia in California, part of the Checkmat team under Leo Vieira. Born March 14, 1976, in Minas Gerais, Brazil, she was a competitive handball player until an ACL tear at 16 ended that path; she then found jiu-jitsu, trained relentlessly and earned her blue belt in six months. She received her black belt in 1998 and became a three-time World Champion and four-time Pan American Champion. In 2001 she was invited to start a women's class at Rigan Machado's academy in California and moved to the United States for good. She returned to the mats in 2014, opened her own academy in Valencia and won her fourth Pan American title in 2019. On March 5, 2022, Leo Vieira awarded her a sixth-degree black belt, making her the highest-ranked female Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioner in the United States.
