Master Alexandre "Soca" Freitas founded Soca BJJ and holds a red-and-black seventh-degree coral belt. He started training at fifteen after tagging along with his older brother, then a blue belt at Gracie Barra, and learned first under Jean Jacques Machado and later under Carlos Gracie Jr., who remains his direct instructor. The school lists him as training since 1987, teaching since 1993 and having promoted 134 black belts. Over nearly four decades of competition he became a ten-time IBJJF World Master champion, six-time Pan-American champion, 1998 ADCC World Submission Grappling champion and two-time Abu Dhabi World Legend champion, and in 2016 he was nominated among the top ten BJJ fighters of all time. He continues to train, teach and compete, and his curriculum forms the basis of every adult programme at Soca BJJ's four locations.
