Andre "Alemao" Vasconcellos, known to his students as Professor Andre Alemao, is the professor at Carlson Gracie South Bay and holds a sixth-degree black belt. He started Jiu Jitsu at 14, the year his family moved to Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro, directly across the street from the Carlson Gracie headquarters; with encouragement from his stepfather he crossed the road and began training. Competition became his focus early on, and after earning his purple belt he decided to teach, building a reputation in Brazil for developing champions. In 2012 he opened his gym in Southern California, growing it from no students into one of the strongest competition teams in the South Bay, with a team that now competes at the elite level internationally.
