Bruno "Mamute" Paulista is the owner and head instructor of Mamute Jiu Jitsu. Born in Brasilia, he trained there to purple belt before moving to Florianopolis in 2005, where he received his black belt in December 2006; he has taught since 2004 and moved to the United States in 2007. A World and Pan American No-Gi champion and professional MMA fighter, he is known for his open guard. Paulista represents both the Gracie and Fadda lineages and is one of just two black belts in the United States recognized by the Fadda line. Two months after taking over his academy he suffered a traumatic brain injury in a car wreck. After relearning everyday tasks and undergoing several surgeries while running the school, he returned to the mats; in 2014 the academy left its parent company, took the Mamute name and moved to a new location.
