Sensei Edson Carvalho is an eighth-degree Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt and seventh-degree judo black belt with more than 45 years of experience. A native of Bahia, he left in 1989 to fight in Rio de Janeiro, where he built a following and a respected name; his brother Ricardo named the academy he founded in 1991 in Edson's honour. The site credits Edson's reputation as the catalyst for the growth of jiu-jitsu in Bahia, and in 1996 the two brothers created the Federação Baiana de Jiu-Jitsu. He currently leads the Team Carvalho academy in Dunnellon, Florida, where his main focus is on helping the next generation through kids' martial arts classes.
