Jovany Varela started training in 1991 under Gene LeBell and Gokor Chivichyan at the original Hayastan MMA Academy, and the site describes him as Gokor's longest-standing and highest-ranked original student. He holds a fourth-degree black belt in the Hayastan Grappling System, a fourth-degree Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt under Gracie Barra professor Thiago Reinaldo De Souza, a seventh-degree (red and white belt) in judo, and a Master Level 2 in Sambo awarded in Russia by FIAS technical director Sergey Tabakov, which the site says made him the first Hispanic to receive that rank. With almost 50 years in judo, sambo and jiu-jitsu, Varela teaches the adult grappling, judo, jiu-jitsu and sambo classes. His career highlights include world championships and international awards, and he serves as an official judge for the California State Athletic Commission at UFC, BKFC, professional MMA and boxing events, as well as a FIAS Sambo technical commissioner.
