Gilbert Smith Jr. is the owner and head coach of Victory MMA in Colorado Springs, which he founded in 2009. He started wrestling and martial arts young, joined the United States Army at 17 and served six and a half years on active duty, then spent three years as a civilian contractor at Camp Victory in Baghdad, where he voluntarily trained military and civilian personnel in MMA and created the fight team Victory Top Team. Smith earned his first-degree jiu-jitsu black belt under Professor Iako Kalili, studied Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under Marcelo Garcia in New York City, and is a certified Muay Thai instructor under Master Toddy in Thailand. As a professional MMA fighter he went 13-6, competed on two seasons of The Ultimate Fighter, fought in Bellator and the UFC, and won the 2015 RFA 170-pound and 2013 Sparta Combat League 185-pound titles.
