Greg Lapin is the founder of Vida Jiu-Jitsu in Mandeville, Louisiana, which he runs with his wife Casey. A black belt under Professor Erick Raposo, he started jiu-jitsu in 2005 while working as a New Orleans police officer, motivated by the practical need to handle violence on the job. After moving into U.S. Government work he spent two decades in law enforcement and government special operations, deploying to war zones around the world, and trained only intermittently between assignments, remaining a white belt for roughly ten years. His training became consistent during a posting in the United Arab Emirates, where he studied under Tiago Bravo and earned his blue belt in 2016. In September 2022 he promoted Eric, the academy's current head professor, to black belt, the first black belt awarded at Vida. Lapin's stated goal is to expose as many people as possible to the art.
