Gustavo Carpio is the head instructor of Carpio Jiu Jitsu and a fourth-degree black belt. He began Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in October 1998 in Lima, Peru, under Jorge Balarin, and from 2004 trained under Sergio Correa "Marra," who awarded him his purple, brown, and black belts. Between 2004 and 2009 he trained and taught at Sniper Gym in Lima while competing internationally, winning American Nationals gold and IBJJF Pan American bronze as a purple belt, then Pan American and 2008 IBJJF Worlds bronzes as a brown belt. After completing his studies in psychology, he moved to the United States in 2009 to teach and compete full time. As a black belt he earned Pan American bronze in 2013, Master 1 Pan American gold in 2018, and silver at the 2021 Abu Dhabi World Championship. His teaching emphasizes conceptual understanding and technical detail, and he shares weekly technique videos online.
