Jesse Michael Marez is a member of the instructor team at Mongrel Martial Arts in Richmond. He began martial arts in 1984, inspired by comic-book heroes, and earned black belts in several traditional arts, including Shaolin Kenpo, Tae Kwon Do, Champions Martial Arts and Shorin Ryu Karate, before finding his true passion in grappling through Scientific Wrestling and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Marez received his 2nd degree black belt in BJJ under Pete Sutton in 2017, with a lineage running from Helio Gracie through Royler Gracie/Vinicius Aieta, Vinny Magalhaes and Peter Sutton. He is an IBJJF black belt, a 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu black belt and former coach at 10th Planet Sacramento, a Scientific Wrestling head coach ranked under Billy Robinson and Jake Shannon, and a Western Combat Arts certified head coach under Mark Hatmaker. He also spent three years as an assistant wrestling coach at a Riverside, California high school.
