Joel Gerson is the founder, owner and chief instructor of REVMMA in Toronto. He has spent close to four decades training in jiu jitsu, judo and mixed martial arts, and over that time earned black belts in both Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (IBJJF) and Judo (IJF). He is also a certified instructor in Gracie Jiu-Jitsu and one of a small group of Canadians certified as an MMA judge under Big John McCarthy. Gerson competed before MMA was mainstream in Canada, training extensively with the Canadian Olympic Judo Team, winning multiple Canadian Jiu Jitsu Championship titles and later medalling at the World Masters. In his professional MMA debut in Japan in 1998 he submitted Rumina Sato by armbar in the first round, a win Joe Rogan later discussed on his podcast. At REVMMA he heads the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu programs and is known in particular for his children's jiu jitsu instruction.
