José Humberto Tavares, known within the team as Humberto Tavares, is the creator and leader of Equipe Corpo & Mente and a seventh-degree black belt professor. He was born on 13 May 1964 at Fazenda Cacimba de Cima in the municipality of Sertânia, Pernambuco, Brazil. The team's origins go back to 1986, when Tavares and his training partner Joselito Sá, both judo athletes at SESI at the time, decided to open an academy together; it was inaugurated on 1 July 1986 on Rua Gonçalo Alves, opposite the Joia da Princesa municipal stadium in Feira de Santana, Bahia, where the team's headquarters remains under his direction. Tavares frames jiu-jitsu as a philosophy of life, teaching that the essence of Budo lies in self-improvement through introspection and just conduct rather than in combat alone.
