Jose Luis dos Santos Varella Barca is an instructor at HAUS 021 in Mendota Heights, Minnesota, where he teaches the adult gi classes as well as the kids and youth programs. A 4th degree black belt, he earned his rank under Master Julio Cesar Pereira, an 8th degree red and white belt known for co-founding the GF Team (Grappling Fight Team), formerly the Universidade Gama Filho program in Brazil. Born in Rio de Janeiro, Barca has trained Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for 23 years and has been instructing for more than 15 of them. His competition titles include Pan American championships in both gi and no-gi and an American Nationals no-gi championship, though he says his favorite title is father and husband. Away from the gym he spends his time cooking plant-based recipes with his daughters.
