Professor Lewis Matthews is the head instructor and owner of Gracie Barra Harrogate. He has been training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu since 2006 and was awarded his black belt in December 2017 by Professor Victor Estima, head of Gracie Barra Europe; he now holds a 2nd degree black belt. Matthews is a keen competitor who enjoys testing his jiu-jitsu under pressure, but his main focus is on sharing the benefits of BJJ with members and supporting their own goals, with an emphasis on sound fundamentals and intelligent grappling over physical strength. He leads the coaching team together with Khalil Bostan, and in 2024 he awarded a black belt to Luke Craggs, the first member to progress through every rank at the academy.
