Marcello C. Monteiro is the founder and president of the BJJ Coach International Jiu Jitsu Association, headquartered at his Indianapolis, Indiana academy, where he has lived since 2003. He began jiu-jitsu at six under Alvaro Barreto at the Corpo Quatro Academy in Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro, and trained seriously from sixteen. For years he was regarded as Ricardo De La Riva's protégé, helping teach at De La Riva's academy until receiving his black belt from him in December 1999; he also trained with Sergio Souza and Ricardo Juca. Monteiro opened his first school in Nova Friburgo in 1998 and won the lightweight division of the 1997 Carlson Gracie team tournament. He wrote "Secret Positions," the first no-gi jiu-jitsu book, published by Gracie Magazine. He holds a fifth-degree diploma from FJJRio and fourth-degree diplomas from the JJGF, IBJJF and CBJJO, and is a registered physical education professor in Brazil.
