Mark Plavcan is the head BJJ instructor and co-owner, with his wife Sonya, of Alliance Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Madison in Wisconsin, whose current facility opened in fall 2019. A second-degree black belt under Romero "Jacare" Cavalcanti and Alliance BJJ, he began martial arts at age seven with Judo at a local Boys Club and started competing soon after. He received his blue belt from Pedro Sauer in 2000 and his purple belt in 2004, joined the Alliance team in 2009, and earned his brown belt in 2010 and black belt in March 2013, both from Cavalcanti. Plavcan holds an undefeated amateur and professional MMA record, is an Alliance certified instructor, and has coached UFC veterans and BJJ world champions. His black belt results include gold at the 2016 IBJJF Atlanta Open and bronze at the 2017 IBJJF Pan American Championships.
