Mauricio "Tinguinha" Mariano is the head instructor of Tinguinha BJJ Academy in Yorba Linda, a sixth-degree black belt who has held his black belt since 1996. Born and raised in Rio de Janeiro, he started jiu-jitsu at 11 under instructor Pitoco, moved to the Barra Gracie school of Jean Jacques Machado and Carlos Gracie Jr., and trained under Carlos Gracie Jr. from blue belt to black belt. Mariano began teaching as a purple belt and has taught in Brazil, Japan and the United States, arriving in the US in 2000. He is known for the spider guard he developed as a small kid training in adult classes. He spent ten years as Global BJJ Director for UFC Gym and in 2019 co-founded the R1ng BJJ Team with Roberto "Gordo" Correia, Alexandre "Soca" and Marcio "Pé de Pano". He wrote the academy's curriculum and has trained and promoted its instructors.
