Master Mauricio Gomes heads the Mauricio Gomes Legacy, the affiliation Parity Martial Arts belongs to, and awarded the club's head coach Jon Wellstead his first degree. Often called the godfather of BJJ in the UK, he began training at four at João Alberto Barreto's academy, taken to classes by his father, a brown belt. He is the father and coach of ten-time world champion Roger Gracie. In the late 1990s he moved to the UK and established the first Gracie Barra gym there, and on 25 August 2017 he was promoted to 8th-degree red and white belt, marking 38 years as a black belt and more than 50 years in the art.
