Professor Omar Salvosa is the owner and head instructor of Salvosa Jiu-Jitsu Academy in Scarborough and the founder of Team Ascension, which he established in 1998. He was a key member of the small group that pioneered Brazilian jiu-jitsu in Ontario in the early 1990s, winning five national titles between 1996 and 2000 and twice taking gold for Canada at the World Kobudo Federation's Grappling Championship in 1999 and 2000. He was also among Canada's first international MMA competitors, with bouts in France and Japan. Salvosa is Ontario's senior representative of Master Marcus Soares, a Carlson Gracie Sr. black belt, and the academy's instructors page lists him as a fifth-degree black belt. After a ten-year break he returned to competition in 2014 and won gold at the IBJJF No-Gi World Championship, adding a Pan-American title in 2015 in the masters featherweight division.
