Paul Carnicella is the founder and head coach of Carnicella Mixed Martial Arts & Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in Clifton, New Jersey, an affiliate academy under Sensei Edson Carvalho. He began Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under Carvalho, a national jiu-jitsu and judo champion who was part of Team Carlson Gracie Sr., and received his black belt from him. His background also includes boxing, Thai kickboxing and Russian sambo. In the Masters Division at the Mundials Carnicella won his weight class and placed third in the absolute, and he took second in the black belt division at the 2007 Battle at the Beach. He was inducted into the NJ Martial Arts Hall of Fame in 2017 as a trainer and has coached amateur and professional fighters. A Newark Police detective on its Emergency Response Team, he standardized the defensive tactics program for New Jersey's police training commission.
