Pedro Sauer heads the Pedro Sauer Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Association and holds an eighth-degree coral belt. Born and raised in Rio de Janeiro, he boxed from age five and later took up judo and taekwondo before his friend Rickson Gracie invited him, at fifteen, to train jiu-jitsu with Royler Gracie. He received his black belt in 1985 and, in 1986, the Técnico de Jiu-Jitsu certificate directly from Helio Gracie; Rickson Gracie is his teacher. Sauer studied economics and business administration and worked as a stockbroker in Brazil for eleven years before moving to the United States in 1990 to teach full time, first in California, then Utah, and from 2005 in Northern Virginia, where One Spirit Martial Arts became the association's headquarters. He began teaching in 1986 and now oversees more than 150 affiliated schools worldwide.
