Perry Bateson is the owner and lead instructor of Northwest Jiu Jitsu Academy in Maple Ridge, which he and his wife Karen have owned and operated alongside Bateson's Martial Arts since 1994. He has studied martial arts since 1985 and holds black belt rank or higher in several arts, including Tae Kwon Do, Kung Fu and Brazilian jiu-jitsu, with additional study in self-defence, conflict resolution and fitness. Known to students as "Sir", he holds teaching designations in behaviour development and has worked for years with people with unique learning abilities. Bateson began Brazilian jiu-jitsu in 2000 and received his black belt in 2017 from his professor, fifth-degree black belt Brian J. Johnson, within the Machado brothers' lineage. He competed through most of his career, winning several World Masters titles in gi and no-gi at purple, brown and black belt.
