Roberto Correa de Lima, known worldwide as Gordo, heads the Gordo Jiu Jitsu USA Academy in Weston, Florida. Raised in Rio de Janeiro, he started training in 1986 at age 15, influenced by his close friend Ralph Gracie. A serious knee injury as an 18-year-old purple belt forced him to adapt his game, and out of that he developed the modern half guard, earning the nickname "king of the half-guard." Gordo received his black belt in 1993 and went on to win national and international titles, including two world championships and four Pan American championships. He has been teaching since the 1990s, with academies around the world and two years spent training the UAE national team, and has produced champions in both Jiu-Jitsu and MMA. In 2024, after 30 years as a black belt, he was awarded his coral belt by Renzo Gracie.
