Professor Tulsa Simpson is the founder and head instructor of Groundstone Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Sneads Ferry, North Carolina. A black belt under Professor Fredson Paixão, he has more than 34 years of martial arts experience and over 26 years of coaching and instruction. His Jiu-Jitsu began in Okinawa, Japan, where he trained under Professor Ivan Sakamoto, and he took up teaching full time after retiring from a 20-year career in the United States Marine Corps. Simpson founded Groundstone in 2014 with a few mats in a garage, opened its first brick-and-mortar academy in 2017, and in 2020, together with his wife Professor Bianca Simpson, bought and converted the warehouse on Old Folkstone Road that houses the academy today. Known for detail-oriented instruction and a structured curriculum, he builds his teaching on fundamentals, consistency and purposeful repetition.
