In 2017 he became the first black belt to complete the Super Slam, winning ADCC, the World Championship, the Pan Championship, the European Championship and the Brazilian Nationals in a single year. Known for an attacking style, his guard was voted Best Guard of the Decade by fellow world champions in Gracie Magazine. He is a member of both the IBJJF Hall of Fame and the ADCC Hall of Fame (2022). As a coach, Cobrinha leads world champions Kennedy Maciel, his son, and Jalen Fonacier, promoted Mikey Musumeci to third-degree black belt, and has coached Fabricio Werdum and Cris Cyborg.
